Photo Essay: North Carolina Coastal Adventures
"Knee deep in paradise"
Combing the Outer Banks and the Crystal Coast
A memorable trip down the coast to explore the beaches, the towns and soak in the local vibe. I was overwhelmed with lots of places to shoot photos. I am sharing some of those with you today. I hope you enjoy them.
Sunrise in Nags Head
Getting up early is my favorite way to start the day. I like to go for a long walk and if I am traveling, find a local coffee shop. Having coffee with the locals helps me feel the local energy and meet new friends.
On this morning, I discover a few special places on the beach to shoot. The colors are unbelievable. I love the sounds and the power of the pounding water. I revel in the fact that no one is around. All I hear is the ocean and the waves.
There’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away. - Sarah Kay
Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge is home to Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest freshwater lake in North Carolina. Over 100,000 tundra swan, Canada geese, snow geese and 18 species of ducks overwinter here on their migration routes. A beautiful spot for birding, capturing photos and soaking in the wildness.
A long boardwalk extends into Lake Mattamuskeet with a viewpoint.
We are all islands, in a common sea. - Elif Shafak
Morning View Coffee Company
My favorite stop for fresh-roasted coffee in Nag’s Head. Owned and operated by women. Coffee roasted on-site and available to buy online.
A simple cup of coffee becomes happiest when you share it with a friend.
The Kill Devil Grill Restaurant
Enjoyed a wonderful meal at the locally popular Kill Devil Grill Restaurant just across from our lodging. A line formed by 6 PM on a Tuesday night in April.
Sunset photo shoot on the beach
I assisted my brother, a professional photographer, on a family photo shoot on Atlantic Beach. The wind and the clouds played havoc with timing the colors just right. With each passing moment, the colors changed dramatically. It was a magical evening.
Family photo shoots on the beach are popular. This photo shoot included a surprise marriage proposal. Everyone was thrilled - especially the bride-to-be.
Thank you to Jim Woltjen, an award-winning professional photographer for all his advice and guidance during my memorable visit.

When you lose yourself, you find the keys to paradise. - Zac Brown
Beautiful photos!
Great photos! I love the Sarah Kay quote. It reminds me of one of my faves about the beach:
There is no place like the beach.
Where the land meets the sea,
and the sea meets the sky.
