Weekend Wanderer: Lake George Winter Carnival in Upstate New York
Polar plunges, ice races, cocoa bars, dog talent contests and more
Weekend Wanderer is where I share one place or activity each week—easy, low-pressure ideas for making the most of the weekend.
One place. One plan. One good day.
Here’s my pick for the weekend—the Lake George Winter Carnival — where a frozen lake becomes a full-on winter playground.
🎉 The Plan
Spend a winter day (or two) at the Lake George Winter Carnival in Lake George — a lively celebration that turns a frozen lake into a playground.
From invigorating (and healthy) polar plunges to thrilling ice races and a dog talent show that steals the spotlight, this is winter at full volume. Hot cocoa flowing all weekend to keep you warm and energized. What more could you ask for?
📍 About Lake George
Stretching about 32 miles long and reaching depths of more than 190 feet, Lake George sits at the southeastern edge of the Adirondack Park. Often called the “Queen of American Lakes,” it’s easily accessible — just a short drive north of Albany, New York.
❄️ Lake George Is Officially Frozen
IIn 2026, Lake George officially reached full ice-over on January 26 — about a week later than its average freeze date of January 19. With the lake fully frozen for the second year in a row, it once again becomes the stage for the Lake George Winter Carnival and its long-standing winter traditions.
📍 Where
Lake George, New York and the frozen surface of Lake George
📜 A Quick History Note
The Lake George Winter Carnival has been celebrating winter for decades, embracing the frozen lake as its stage. What began as a way to brighten the quiet season has grown into one of upstate New York’s most popular destinations for winter fun. A prefect way to embrace the cold with fun.
⏱️ Time
Weekend-long festivities (Saturday and/or Sunday)
Drop in for a few hours or make a full day of it. This is my kind of plan.

🌲 Why this works now
I love the village of Lake George. Its close proximity to a major highway makes it an easy decision to visit — at any time of the year. The setting is spectacular— with the Adirondack mountains in the background.
For me, this winter has felt abnormally long — making this the perfect weekend to get away and escape.
There’s something energizing about standing on the ice (it must be the cold) with a crowd, cheering on racers, watching brave souls take the plunge, or laughing at a dog talent contest in snow boots.

🧭 Good to know
Dress warmly (layers, mittens, hat, boots with traction) 🧣
Events depend on ice and weather conditions
Expect crowds and high energy
Parking fills quickly — arrive early
🧣 Best for
Anyone who enjoys big winter energy — families, friend groups, thrill-seekers, and those who prefer cheering from the sidelines with a cocoa in hand.
🔥 Where to warm up afterward
Biscotti Brothers Cafe (perfect name for a coffee place)

When I was a kid, we went to Lake George to visit family friends during the summer. The winter activities sound just as fun!
Sounds like so much fun! I visited Lake George with my family when I was a teen. Beautiful area. Great post Jenn!
