My family has been vacationing in the Eagle Bay/Big Moose area for over 60 years. The last 25 we’ve rented the same cabins on Fourth Lake every August. Going from loons being mysterious but never seen to having them right off the dock multiple times a day is miraculous. Next? Hoping Eagle Bay actually has eagles again.

I 💞Pamela Leavey too. I’m new to your Substack and had never heard the call of a loon(s) until today. Thank you!

Congrats on making the 25 most read Travel posts on Substack! Very well deserved! I thoroughly enjoyed that post, as well as sharing my morning coffee with you and your post today!

Several years ago, my wife's friend worked as a bird conservationist at the Loon Center in NH. We were invited to spend the 4th of July weekend at the Loon Center circa 2014. It was my first time actually learning about the loon. I've always been captivated by their beautiful calls, but I knew so little about them as a species.

Speaking of loon calls, the common loon's call is the one of the most sampled sounds in pop music history. It has appeared on so many Grammy winning tracks...The loon should get an honorary Grammy and royalties.

Thank you for your kind words. I was stoked.

So happy to hear that another state has a loon conservation center. I visited our New York conservation center in Saranac Lake last year and I learned a lot about them

I did not know that the loon's call being used so much. That is so neat. I just love the sound. I could listen to it all the time.

I have a feeling the loon is well represented and cherished all over the northeast. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there's a fan club called the "loonatics"!

I learned about the common loon call in pop culture via an NPR segment. It's such an arresting sound, so it's no surprise that musicians find it to be inspiring.

We live across the street from a lake in a suburb northwest of Minneapolis. Not exactly the wilderness. About 5 years ago a pair of loons took up residence on the lake. I thought with all the busyness they would never stay. But they have come back year after year. And I look forward every spring to hear them calling, and know that when I no longer hear them winter is on its way, and I wait to hear them again.

Wow. I would love that. I do hear that most loons come back to the same lake every year.

We are blessed that we live fairly close to the Mississippi River, and the Rum River so we get a wide variety of birds. We pretty regularly see bald eagles, osprey, owls, and more. We had a red-tailed hawk in our tree this morning about 20 feet from us while we drank our coffee on the deck.

They are one of my favorites and I look forward to going to the Adirondacks every year to look for them.
