You amaze and inspire me, Jenn. I'm looking forward to tracking you on this journey. Your description of your first trek there and your feelings of being unprepared, reminded me a lot of my experience trekking in Nepal. Despite training for months and superb guides, I had never done anything like that before and I was completely unprepared for hiking at those altitudes and in those conditions. It was an incredible experience and one that I am grateful for. But like you, I feel that I was unable to completely absorb it as much of my time and energy was just coping with the physical strain of the adventure. Unlike you, I am unlikely to go back, but I look forward to following your adventure and so admire your adventurous spirit.
Just looking back 20 years......I had to search my mind for fuzzy memories......I just think I did not realize at the time what was coming - the grandeur, the space, the vastness. Today, I am going into this with my eyes wide open and I think more nervous about what lies ahead. I do not think I could trek to Nepal like you did....I am nervous about traveling to "third-world" countries right now.
Snow on the South Rim! That is rare. You probably ran the rim to rim.....I wish I lived closer as I would probably hike there weekly. I am excited (and nervous) about the trip so a big emphasis on preparation and training - lots of glute and leg strengthening exercises.
It was definitely an experience 20 years ago - backpacking it......I survived somewhat (I was younger). You need to put a trip like this on your bucket list. I am excited to share my journey with others here.
Bravo! And excited to follow along. I have wanted to do the rim to rim to rim but I am terrible at planning! I always want to show up and have it all planned for me so I don't have to think! Why I love organized races :) But I am hoping your knowledge and organization and tips will motivate me... or maybe convince someone else to plan it for me :)
Yes, it is definitely something you have to do quite a bit of planning in advance - especially if you live on the East Coast (like us). Thank you for following along....I am excited about sharing my journey with others.
Jenn, one of my all time favorite places in the world! I will be following along this one! Most people never get below the rim. And the place is massively huge. A person could spend an entire life time exploring it. Personally I have seen not it only from many angles, but at many times of the year. I remember an April trip to the south rim when it snowed, like a LOT.
Best to you in training and planning the epic adventure!
Excited to read your series on this and check out some of the resources you suggested. My rim to rim hike in 2019 remains one of my most cherished memories.
I spend a lot of time on the stair climber at the gym. I just enjoy it so it’s a workout I come back to a lot. I feel like that helped me tremendously.
BTW, maybe it was me but I couldn’t get the Buy Me A Coffee link to work on your article.

Looking forward to reading more about your return to the Grand Canyon, Jenn.

I’m stoked to read more about this! I’ve seen the Grand Canyon, but only from the rim. Would love to backpack it one day!

Great resource Jenn! I admire your accomplishments - I will never hike the Grand Canyon but will live vicariously through your posts!
I am excited but nervous......so a lot of planning and training. Thank you.

So cool about your 2019 rim to rim hike. Does anything stick out in your mind as far as your training and preparation?

I have heard about the stair climber. Thank you for the tip. And I will check that link - ugh.
I just fixed the link.....in fact, I probably just forgot to add the link.
